Before diving into how to confirm ovulation, let’s quickly review the four main phases of the menstrual cycle. Each phase has its own hormonal shifts, and understanding these changes can help you track your cycle with more accuracy.

1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5)

  • This is the bleeding phase when your body sheds the endometrial lining if pregnancy hasn't occurred.

  • Hormone levels (estrogen and progesterone) are at their lowest, and you may experience fatigue, cramps, and mood swings.

2. Follicular Phase (Days 6-14)

  • Following menstruation, your body begins to prepare for ovulation. Estrogen levels start to rise as follicles in the ovaries begin to mature.

  • This is when you may notice increased energy and libido, and it’s the best time for high-energy activities.

3. Ovulatory Phase (Days 14-16)

  • This is when ovulation occurs—your body releases a mature egg from the ovary.

  • Estrogen peaks, and progesterone begins to rise. This phase is often when women feel their most energetic and confident.

4. Luteal Phase (Days 17-28)

  • After ovulation, progesterone helps prepare the body for potential pregnancy.

  • If conception doesn’t happen, estrogen and progesterone levels will drop, leading to PMS symptoms like mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness.

By tracking your cycle, you can pinpoint where you are in these phases and better understand your body’s natural fluctuations.

How to Confirm Ovulation: Signs and Methods

The most important part of cycle tracking for those trying to conceive is confirming ovulation. Understanding when ovulation occurs in your cycle will allow you to optimize your chances of pregnancy or simply gain insight into your body’s health.

1. Tracking Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

One of the most reliable methods for confirming ovulation is by tracking your basal body temperature (BBT). Your BBT is your body’s temperature when you first wake up in the morning, before you get out of bed or eat anything. This is a great way to detect subtle changes that signal ovulation. This is also the method I personally use with the Oura ring and Natural Cycles app.

How to track BBT:

  • Take your temperature every morning at the same time before getting out of bed, using a basal thermometer (which measures temperature to the tenth degree).

  • During the follicular phase, your temperature will be lower. After ovulation, your temperature will rise by about 0.5°F-1°F due to increased progesterone.

  • A sustained rise in BBT for 3 days or more indicates that ovulation has occurred.

2. Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), which occurs just before ovulation. The presence of an LH surge indicates that ovulation is about to happen, typically within the next 12-36 hours.

How to use OPKs:

  • Use an OPK once a day, preferably in the afternoon, when LH levels are most concentrated.

  • A positive result (usually a test line darker than the control line) indicates the start of your fertile window.

  • Once you get a positive result, ovulation should happen within the next 1-2 days, so this is the best time to try conceiving.

3. Cervical Mucus Observation

Your cervical mucus changes throughout your cycle, and tracking it can give you insight into when you’re most fertile.

  • Before ovulation, cervical mucus is thick and sticky.

  • During ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery, resembling the consistency of egg whites. This is the most fertile time for conception.

Using an App to Track Your Cycle

One of the easiest ways to track your cycle and confirm ovulation is to use a cycle-tracking app. Apps like Natural Cycles, Clue, and Ovia make it simple to log your temperature, cervical mucus, and OPK results. Many apps also allow you to track symptoms like cramps, mood, and energy, giving you a full picture of your hormonal health.

By consistently tracking your cycle, you can predict ovulation, understand your body’s natural rhythm, and identify any potential hormonal imbalances early.
